One of the best things about running a small restaurant is meeting people like Mickey, from Mickey’s Fruit & Veg.
We have been buying most of our fruit and veg from Mickey since we started in 2013, and I am always blown away by this guy’s stamina. I don’t know the exact number, but Mickey must put in 80-90 hours a week minimum to provide us and other small food businesses in the area with great-value, high quality produce week in, week out. Just a staggering commitment!
Beyond being a providore, Mickey has been an invaluable source of inspiration for me in terms of maintaining some sanity when business slows down or things go wrong. He has so much wisdom when it comes to running a small business and has always been very generous in sharing this with me, acting as counselor/coach/psychologist in the little room at the back of his shop on Pitt Street. For that I will always only have good things to say about the man!
Here is someone who gives so much to the community through his work, and I really find that inspiring. He reminds me in many ways of my father, who worked incredibly hard to provide for our family growing fruit and vegetables back home in NZ.
So, for the record Mickey, thank you so much and I wish you all the best.
If you are in the neighbourhood, drop in and say g’day to this genuine local legend.
